These courses are intended primarily for operators of small water and wastewater systems. However, information on basic water quality, surface water and groundwater systems, and wastewater systems can benefit a wide variety of professionals, such as local and state level policymakers and planners, educators, construction managers, landowners, natural resource managers, real estate professionals and others. Free online courses on water quality for water and wastewater system operators now available

Academic Technology and Outreach at Montana State University and the Montana University System Water Center will offer a series of four noncredit courses that provide water quality training and continuing education opportunities for water and wastewater system operators. Registration is now open for these fully online, free courses, which are self-paced and can be accessed at any time.

Four new citizen science kits available to check out at MSU Library

The MSU Science Math Resource Center, with support from Montana NSF EPSCoR, has partnered with the MSU Library to provide four citizen science kits that all MSU Library users, including community borrowers, may use for free.

Four MSU Undergraduates Chosen for Applied Internship Program

In the new internship program offered through the Thermal Biology Institute (TBI), students work on campus directly with MSU faculty members, then complete an internship with industry research partners. The four students selected, and the locations of their summer internships, are Conner Bailey (Pacific Northwest National Labs), Evangaline Koonce (National Renewable Energy Lab), Daniel McDonald (Lucigen Corporation), and Laura Whitmore (Pacific Northwest National Labs).

Family Science Day Outreach

On Thursday, February 6, staff from the Science Math Resource Center (SMRC) facilitated SMART FIRES activities at MSU’s Family Science Day. Over 200 fifth grade students from local schools came to campus to engage with hands-on activities centered around STEM research at MSU. Two graduate students from the SMART FIRES project Mary Farina and Azin Rashed graciously helped put on the event and brought their research expertise to the broader impacts team. At the SMART FIRES table the students learned about sensors, which are a core research area of the project.

Everest Expedition

Everest Expedition

In Spring 2012, a team of world-class climbers will attempt to summit Mount Everest. Team member Dr. Dave Lageson, a Montana State University professor of geology, plans a rigorous scientific component to complement the expedition's climbing goals. The team is partnering with Montana NSF EPSCoR to produce an education and public outreach program that reaches schools and citizens throughout Montana and beyond. The focus of this outreach is the science of Everest, particularly glaciology, geology, weather, climate change, and high-altitude physiology.
