- $2,000 stipend
and 10 weeks housing for 8 weeks of laboratory and research work--student
is responsible for meals, personal expenses and outdoor outing fees
(approximately $200.00).
- No previous lab
experience necessary--an interest in scientific research is the only
requirement.
- Detailed program
orientation--including information on research methods, NSF EPSCoR grant
and tours of various campus laboratories.
- One-on-one time
with faculty mentors--bi-monthly meetings for review, experiment and
method guidance and general research discussions.
- Program coordinator
available daily--to answer questions, give advice and programmatic help,
guide fieldtrips or grab lunch.
- Group and individual
discussions--sharing lab and program experiences in a comfortable roundtable
setting.
- Educational fieldtrips--on
and off-campus destinations that are participating in private, state,
national and/or international research projects.
- Lecture Series--once
a week attend a lecture presented by well known research scientists
on subjects ranging from highly individualized, personal research to
the latest, hottest research topics being studied. Plus, the opportunity
to enjoy a pre-lecture lunch and conversation with each guest lecturer.
- Daily research
journaling--learn how to document your experiments, methods and daily
thoughts on your laboratory experiences.
- Presentation of
laboratory experiences--gain skills through oral presentation.
- Mentor assessment
of laboratory skills--written evaluation from your mentor of your strengths
and weaknesses and pointers on ways to enhance your skills.
- Final paper for
the National Science Foundation--reporting on your summer research,
with the added opportunity to evaluate your overall summer experiences.
