The National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) is a grant-funded program to improve the science and technology infrastructure in select states which have not had competitive extramural funding levels. Funded by NSF EPSCoR, the Undergraduate Summer Diversity Research Program at The University of Montana is designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to be actively involved with scientific or technological research in an academic setting. Participants are recruited from universities whose student bodies are largely comprised of students from diverse ethnic, racial or cultural backgrounds. Emphasis is placed upon undergraduates who have had little prior opportunities to work in a laboratory or field research setting. Following a competitive selection process, students are matched with UM faculty who are actively involved in research. The selected students are flown to Missoula, Montana, in June for a ten-week program designed to expose them to research and academic opportunities at The University of Montana, and to experience the "Big Sky Country" at its finest. Students work side by side with world-class faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students, experiencing, first-hand, what a science research career has to offer. With the aid of faculty mentors, students are counseled and advised about graduate school and the various science programs available at The University of Montana. |
